Inclusive comms

    Sensitivity reads

After spending three years in Vintage’s editorial team and three years in Stonewall’s comms team, I’m happy to take on sensitivity reads for books featuring LGBTQ+ themes and/or characters.

Having lived experience of being queer, and undergoing medical transition, I’m able to consult meaningfully on work that engages with LGBTQ+ issues.

  • Cover of Stonewall's 'Out of the Margins' report into LBT+ people worldwide. It features two Black women hugging and smiling, with the text 'OUT OF THE MARGINS' in white on a red background in the upper left corner.

    Out of the Margins copyedit

Out of the Margins is an international project led by Stonewall in coalition with 24 human rights organisations. It builds evidence to advocate for the rights of lesbians, bi women and trans (LBT+) people worldwide.

28 organisations from across the world submitted research to the project. I copyedited a report summarising Out of the Margins’ key findings. This required the ability to understand and simplify complex academic language and LGBTQ+ terminology to make the work accessible to a wider audience, as well as the ability to introduce a cohesive tone of voice across the report.

    NSPCC inclusive comms training

During my time leading the Copy team at the NSPCC, the UK’s leading children’s charity, I was the tone of voice guardian..

I also devised and delivered training to more than 500 colleagues all about how to write clearly and concisely for diverse audiences so that our comms were more accessible. I delivered a range of hour-long and bitesize sessions as well as adapting the content for an e-learning module due to launch in October 2024.

  • An animation by artist Hollie Fuller showing a female black therapist talking to a young white child in a cozy therapy room. It features a bookshelf, framed pictures, and a small table with decorations in the background.

    Trauma-informed training

i worked with the trauma-informed lead at the NSPCC to make sure the e-learning module she had devised was as accessible as possible.

This included restructuring some of the content and adding more signposting to guide learners through the training, plus ensuring all language was as simple and concrete as possible, even when discussing complex topics.
